UCLA Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology
Science Researcher
During my time at Moshaverinia's lab, I delved deep into the realm of molecular research, working within a PhD program environment. A standout project I was involved in centered around dental implants. In the lab I had the opportunity for hands-on experience to familiarize myself with and execute several advanced molecular techniques. For instance, I took on tasks such as recovering cells for in vitro experiments, ensuring their viability and adequacy for subsequent processes. RNA extractions were another significant part of my responsibilities, where I isolated and purified RNA to prepare it for further analysis. One of the pinnacle experiences was performing PCR reactions, amplifying DNA to produce enough for detailed examination of osteoblasts. We explored the potential of surfaces coated with ZIF nanoparticles, examining their efficacy and potential advantages in dental adhesion of osteoblasts to implant surfaces and enhancing the osseointegration. Being a high schooler among PhD candidates presented a unique learning curve, furthering my interest for bioengineering and tissue management.
Howard Baskerville Institute
Intern
My community advocacy has been significantly influenced by my internship at the Howard Baskerville Institute. Named after Howard Baskerville, an American who became a martyr in Iran for his support of the Persian Constitutional Revolution, the institute champions the deep-rooted bond between the people of Iran and Americans. As an intern there, I've directed impactful social media campaigns. However, my goal wasn't merely content dissemination. I aimed to foster a space for in-depth discourse and mutual appreciation between these two rich cultures. This role has not only refined my professional skills but also deepened my understanding and pride in my cultural identity.
Women Life Freedom
Volunteer & Advocate
At the WLF organization, I contributed to the Voices Project, a monumental effort to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Iran. We united 16,000 individuals to record a new arrangement of "Baraye," a powerful Grammy winning song by Iranian artist Shervin Hajipour symbolizing freedom. As an assistant, I was part of a team that raised $50K to support the project and bring the song into post-production. My personal connection as a child of Iranian immigrants made this work deeply meaningful to me. In addition, I helped organize gatherings with influential speakers such as Taylor Hanson to raise awareness. The project not only amplied the song's call for freedom but also connected Iranians with non-Iranians, standing in solidarity with those at risk in Iran.
Slate PR
Intern and Researcher
As an intern at a leading PR firm, I had a crucial assignment: to create a ranking of the top 20 media professionals in the country. I used a rigorous and data-driven method. I assessed writers, broadcasters, and radio hosts based on various key indicators. Their follower counts, their outlet ranks, and their social media engagement rates were essential. These factors showed how influential and popular they were. After doing extensive research and analysis for weeks, I made a final list that was both qualitative and quantifiable. This list proved to be accurate and impactful, as the firm, which had mainly focused on entertainment, expanded into the sports sector, increasing its diversity and scope.
Pianist
Certificate of Merit
From the age of 6, the piano became more than just an instrument to me; it transformed into a lifelong commitment. Over the years, I've graced numerous stages, both within and outside the school environment. However, it wasn't just the allure of the stage that drove me. Behind each recital was a rigorous regimen of practice and continuous learning. This dedication paid off when I attained Level 10 in the Certificate of Merit program, a comprehensive music curriculum renowned for fostering musical excellence. This program not only tested my skill in performance and technique but also refined my skills in ear training, sight-reading, and music theory. Achieving this level is not merely a certificate on the wall; it stands as a symbol of my dedication and mastery over this profound form of art.
Caretaker & Family Support Figure
I have gained a personal understanding of the daily needs and challenges of my Iranian grandparents by caring for them. I take the lead in making sure they are well, from cooking, to carefully planning and driving them to their medical visits. But more than these duties, I often act as a link between two different worlds. Because they face a language barrier, I often interpret for them, making sure they can express their concerns and needs, whether it’s during a health check-up or while dealing with service providers. This experience has not only improved my multitasking and organizational skills but has also increased my respect for the nuances of both cultures and languages.
